چکیده

We study the equation of state (EOS) of quark matter at zero temperature, using the Color Dielectric Model (CDM) to describe confinement. Sensible results are obtained in the version of the CDM for which confinement is imposed smoothly. The two–phases version of the model turns out to give unrealistic results for the EOS. Chiral symmetry plays a marginal rôle and the quarks are massive till high densities. The deconfinement phase transition is smooth and unlikely to be first order. Instabilities of the quark matter and the gap equation are discussed. 24.10.Jv Relativistic models, 24.85.+p Quarks, gluons and QCD in nuclei and nuclear processes Typeset using REVTEX

Unlocking Color and Flavor in Superconducting Strange Quark Matter

We explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter with massless u and d quarks as a function of the strange quark mass ms and the chemical potential μ for baryon number. Neglecting electromagnetism, we describe the different baryonic and quark matter phases at zero temperature. For quark matter, we support our model-independent arguments with a quantitative analysis of a model which u...

Quark description of nuclear matter Jürgen

We discuss the role of an adjoint chiral condensate for color superconducting quark matter. Its presence leads to color-flavor locking in two-flavor quark matter. Color is broken completely as well as chiral symmetry in the two-flavor theory with coexisting adjoint quark-antiquark and antitriplet quark-quark condensates. The qualitative properties of this phase match the properties of ordinary ...

Strange Goings on in Quark Matter

The study of hadronic matter at high baryon density has recently attracted a lot of interest. At zero baryon density chiral symmetry is broken by a quark-anti-quark condensate. At high density condensation in the quarkanti-quark channel is suppressed. Instead, attractive interactions in the color anti-symmetric quark-quark channel favor the formation of diquark condensates. As a consequence, co...

1-2-3-flavor color superconductivity in compact stars

We suggest a scenario where the three light quark flavors are sequentially deconfined under increasing pressure in cold asymmetric nuclear matter as, e.g., in neutron stars. The basis for our analysis is a chiral quark matter model of Nambu– Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type with diquark pairing in the single flavor color-spin-locking (CSL), two-flavor (2SC) and three-flavor color-flavor locking (CFL) ch...

What is the ground state of ordinary hadronic matter if it is compressed to baryon densities several times larger than nuclear matter saturation density? This theoretical question, which has important applications to the physics of neutron stars, has led to the discovery of several novel and unusual phases of QCD. At zero baryon density chiral symmetry is broken by a condensate of quark-anti-qu...
